Help-Portrait 12/12/09

“We just gotta love the death out of ’em!” – Mike Stog http://carboncopycartel.blog.com

Yesterday was the first-ever international free photography event called Help-Portrait. Volunteers and photographers around the world came together to take, print, and deliver free portraits to people in need.

I spent my time at Charm City Church in Baltimore. It was so awesome! I got to work with so many amazing photographers and hang out with the wonderful people of Charm City! I loved seeing people’s expressions when they got their photographs. (We had people printing them out right there!)  I helped at the door greeting people and taking them to the different photographers, so I got to be right in the middle of it all. I feel so BLESSED to have been a part of it!

A family looking at their new portrait!

A girl having fun!

We also had make-up artists offering to do people’s makeup, and the girls and women had such a fun time with that! (There was even a guy who wanted his hair braided, it was fun to watch.)

One woman came with her son and received a make-over and some stunning portraits (she was really beautiful!), and when she left, she started to cry because she said she had never felt so loved.

There was one girl who got to be a supermodel for the day. They even brought in a fan and had it blowing back her hair! I didn’t get a shot of it, but it was so cool. :)

I got to spend a lot of time with some kids while they were waiting for their pictures to be printed. I started to take pictures of them and they wanted to take pictures of me. They were having so much fun, and they got their aunt to smile :) “I hate being in pictures, and they know it,” she said, but she was laughing and having a good time.

Help-Portrait founder Jeremey Cowart tweeted, “Today cultural borders were crossed on one side of the camera and competitve borders on the other.” It’s so true, because it wasn’t about us. It wasn’t about who could get the best shot or who had the better camera, it was about giving people a chance to see the beauty and TREASURE  inside themselves. What a great day!
